About Kate Engel

Kate was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. After completing her undergraduate studies in English at Grant MacEwan University, Kate went on to study law at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. At Thompson Rivers University, Kate received her Juris Doctor of Laws and graduated in 2014 in the inaugural class. Kate completed her articles with Engel Law and, in 2015, Kate was admitted to the bar as a member of the Law Society of Alberta.

Kate’s primary focus of practice is criminal defence. Kate has successfully defended persons accused of criminal offences in Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Kate has a particular interest in using the Charter as a tool to defend against criminal offences, specifically in the context of state abuses of a person’s rights under the Charter.

Kate has experience advancing conviction and sentence appeals at the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal.

In addition to her criminal law experience, Kate has experience with and has assisted individuals with various administrative matters, including Police Act complaints, prison matters including habeas corpus, appeals to the Law Enforcement Review Board, Human Rights matters, School Board matters, Privacy/Freedom of Information matters, and matters involving the Traffic Safety Act.

In her spare time, Kate enjoys snowboarding and training in karate.
