About Patrick McGowan

Patrick McGowan obtained his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1997. He worked as a law clerk at the British Columbia Supreme Court and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1999. Patrick worked for a large Vancouver firm prior to starting his own firm to focus his practice on criminal law. He joined Ritchie Sandford McGowan in 2007.

Patrick defends clients charged with all criminal code offences, drug offences and regulatory offences. He has significant experience defending serious and complex criminal cases. He acts for clients at trial and on appeal. He also assists clients prior to charges being laid by negotiating with Crown counsel and police to attempt to avoid charges.

Patrick has extensive experience defending civil forfeiture cases and also acts for clients facing other civil matters stemming from criminal allegations (such as civil fraud, hydro theft and civil assault). Patrick represents clients on administrative matters, professional discipline proceedings and judicial reviews. Patrick was counsel to the Braidwood Inquiry and the Cohen Commission.

Patrick represents clients with cases throughout British Columbia as well as those with cases in other Provinces and Territories. Patrick has appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia, as well as at the Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Canada.

Patrick is a member of the Trial Lawyers Association British Columbia and the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers. He has been involved with Access to Justice clinics and the UBC Innocence Project.
