Mr. Carter is a partner at Bayne Sellar Ertel Carter. He joined the firm in 2008 after practicing for four and a half years in Vancouver with prominent criminal defence lawyer E. David Crossin, Q.C.
Mr. Carter received his B.A. from McGill University in 1995. He subsequently worked as a television reporter and anchor for a number of years in Ontario and Western Canada. He completed his L.L.B. at Queen’s University in 2002 where he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Blakes Scholar Award given to the student with the highest academic standing. After graduating, Mr. Carter then served as a law clerk at the British Columbia Court of Appeal before being called to the bar in British Columbia in 2003.
Mr. Carter has represented clients under investigation or charged with criminal offences including: the possession, production and trafficking of drugs, murder, kidnapping, driving offences and white collar offences. He has particular expertise defending clients charged with sexual offences. He also has experience with respect to quasi-criminal matters such as professional disciplinary hearings and regulatory matters, in particular defending organizations against work-place safety prosecutions. He has conducted trials in both Provincial and Superior Courts across the country, including in B.C., Nunavut, Quebec and New Brunswick, and has represented Canadian Forces members at military Court Martials, He has argued numerous appeals at the British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Court Martial Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, Mr. Carter has published several articles relating to issues in criminal law and has lectured on criminal law issues at conferences run by the Criminal Lawyers Association, the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa, the Canadian Bar Association and the National Judicial Institute. Mr. Carter is president of the Canadian Bar Association National Criminal Justice Section and has appeared on behalf of that association at many Senate and Parliamentary committee hearings on proposed criminal legislation. Mr. Carter was the 2014 recipient of the Regional Senior Justice Award, given to a member of the County of Carleton Law Association who has made an outstanding contribution as a litigator or solicitor.
