Michael Crystal is a certified criminal law specialist and is currently pursuing a Masters of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
Mr. Crystal obtained his MA in Classics in 1988 from Dalhousie University. He then graduated with an LLB from Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law in 1991. Mr. Crystal articled with the Atlantic law firm Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales and was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1992, followed by the Ontario bar in 1996. He worked as a public defender for the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission from 1991 to 1995. Since then he has worked for Borden Ladner Gervais, Gowlings Lafleur Henderson and Pinkofsky Lockyer before starting his own firm Crystal & Associates in 2001. In 2015 Mr. Crystal joined Spiteri & Ursulak as a partner to lead their privacy, regulatory and class action team. He is currently a sole practitioner.
Mr. Crystal is an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa where he teaches Trial Advocacy, and has taught Advanced Evidence in the past.
In his spare time, Mr. Crystal writes for a number of legal journals and publications. He is also active with Innocence Canada, a non-profit organization advocating for the release of wrongfully-convicted individuals. Michael is currently working on a book discussing political crimes.
