439 University Ave,, Toronto, Ontario
Edward H. Royle is the founding lawyer of the criminal defence firm that bears his name.
After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1981, Mr. Royle articled for Mr. Justice John C. Wilkins, now retired from the Superior Court of Justice, at what was then the firm of Sneath, Wilkins in Toronto. After his call to the bar, he has practised in both civil and criminal litigation. For the last 30 years, his practice has focused exclusively on criminal law with an emphasis on constitutional issues involving human rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He has appeared in all levels of court in the Province of Ontario and in the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. Royle’s particular area of interest is in issues of racial discrimination. He was counsel in the landmark Ontario Court of Appeal case of R. v. Parks, which established an accused person’s right to challenge prospective juries for potential racial bias. He also successfully challenged discriminatory sentencing practices involving African–Canadian women with respect to drug importation sentencing in the case of R. v. Hamilton and Mason. In R. v. Brown et al., he was successful in obtaining a rare award of costs against the Crown for holding accused persons in custody for excessive periods of time before their bail hearings were held.
After more than 25 years as a partner of Jack Pinkofsky and James Lockyer at Canada’s largest criminal defence firm, Mr. Royle founded Edward H. Royle & Partners LLP in 2010. He is proud to offer a full-service criminal law firm devoted to excellence in all aspects of criminal defence litigation. The firm is comprised of a team of lawyers dedicated to pursuing the principles that Mr. Royle has pursued for over thirty-five years. No stone is left unturned in providing a vigorous defence which is designed to ensure the full protection of the rights and interests of all of our valued clients.
