James L. Miglin is an experienced criminal trial lawyer who has appeared before every level of court in Ontario, including the Ontario Court of Appeal, and numerous administrative and regulatory tribunals in hundreds of proceedings dealing with all manner of criminal, quasi-criminal, and regulatory offences. In particular, Mr. Miglin’s practice is focused on the defence of serious criminal charges. He has successfully defended clients charged with drugs and firearms offences, assault, sexual assault, attempted murder, manslaughter, and murder. Mr. Miglin also acts for clients in civil proceedings against police or public authorities involving allegations of serious misconduct or violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Mr. Miglin completed his undergraduate degree at Queen’s University and his law degree at the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law, where he received numerous awards, including the Justice Ronald N. Pugsley Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy and the Editor’s Prize for Best Article for his paper, “From Immunity to Impunity: Charles Taylor and the Special Court of Sierra Leone”, which was published in the Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies. Mr. Miglin also participated in the Criminal Clinic program, which included a placement with Nova Scotia Legal Aid. Following law school, Mr. Miglin completed his articles and was an associate at one of Canada’s premier national law firms before joining Edward H. Royle and Partners LLP.

Mr. Miglin volunteers his time with the Ontario Justice Education Network, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting understanding, education, and dialogue to support a responsive and inclusive justice system.
