Melissa Azevedo joined Heller, Rubel after articling with the firm in 2007. Melissa received her L.L.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2007 and was called to the Ontario Bar in June 2008. Upon completing her first year of law school, she was accepted into the Cornell Law School International and Comparative Law Program at the Université Sorbonne in Paris, France where she studied Comparative Corporate Law and International Commercial Arbitration. During her time at Osgoode Hall, Melissa worked as the Executive Manager for Pro Bono Students of Canada, acted as Duty Counsel for the Community and Legal Aid Services Program (C.L.A.S.P.) and worked alongside Professor Alan Young. Prior to attending law school, Melissa obtained her Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Toronto in 2004.
Melissa practices in all of the courts in the GTA and has successfully defended cases ranging from “Guns and Gangs” project cases, robbery, weapons, 'impaired/over 80' and drug offences to criminal harassment, threatening, all forms of assaults and property related offences. Her practice also includes quasi-criminal and regulatory matters.
Melissa is a member of the Criminal Lawyers Association, the Canadian Bar Association and Ontario Bar Association.
Melissa is fluent in Portuguese and is also a member of the Portuguese Canadian Lawyers Association and the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business and Professionals.
