A. Scott Reid has been certified as a specialist in criminal law (trial litigation) by the Law Society of Ontario as a result of his extensive experience in all aspects of criminal trial litigation.
In addition to being a certified specialist, Mr. Reid is also recognized by Legal Aid Ontario as a defence counsel certified to conduct complex litigation, and he has been placed on the Complex Case Panel for those purposes. Mr. Reid has been admitted to the List of Counsel eligible to practice at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, in recognition of his extensive experience and expertise in the field of criminal defence law.
Mr. Reid is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Criminal Lawyers Association, the Lincoln County Law Association, and the International Criminal Court Bar Association. Mr. Reid graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Science. He then attended the University of Victoria Faculty of Law where he obtained his law degree (LL.B.) with an emphasis in criminal law. He is currently in the process of obtaining his Masters of Law (LL.M.) in Criminal Law and Procedure.
After his call to the Bar, Mr. Reid began practising exclusively in criminal defence at a large firm in downtown Toronto. After eight years, Mr. Reid opened his own criminal defence practice outside the Greater Toronto Area but returned to Toronto, joined Edward H. Royle & Associates in 2013, and became a partner at Edward H. Royle & Partners LLP in 2017.
Mr. Reid has appeared in all levels of court in Ontario including the Ontario Court of Appeal. He routinely conducts lengthy jury trials on serious criminal matters in the Superior Court of Justice. In the course of his career, Mr. Reid has defended all manner of cases including murder, criminal organization offences, manslaughter, aggravated assault, aggravated sexual assault (HIV exposure), robbery, drug trafficking, firearms and firearms trafficking, and perjury.
Mr. Reid takes a vigorous and creative approach to defending all of his clients’ interests and has extensive experience in Charter of Rights litigation. Mr. Reid also has experience challenging the constitutionality of Criminal Code provisions, including bringing a successful application to strike down a mandatory minimum sentence.
