About Matthew A. Marner

It's hard to tell one lawyer from the next. It's hard to tell which ones are full of it, and which ones can back it up. So, I want you, my potential client, to learn about me, what I've done, and what I can do. I encourage you to read the reviews from former clients and from my colleagues here on avvo.com. I also encourage you to go to my website: www.marnerlaw.com. There you can watch video of me actually fighting for my clients in the courtroom before the judge and jury, you can read about my most recent successes, and you can get to know the person you are counting on.

I serve clients in felony and misdemeanor cases in superior court, justice courts, and municipal courts throughout Maricopa County including: Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and others.

I tell my clients that we are a team. When you are scared and uncertain about criminal charges, about the court system, about the punishment you might face; or when you feel helpless because your loved one is facing charges, you want to know about the person you are investing your trust, time, and money in. When you retain me as your attorney, you will know who I am and what I can do for you. You won’t have to wonder, “who is this guy?,” “is he any good,” “can he help me, my child, my spouse?” You or your loved one will be my client and my teammate, not simply a paycheck as many other attorneys see you.

After passing the Arizona State Bar in 2008, I began working as a criminal defense attorney at the Yuma County Legal Defender’s Office in Yuma, Arizona. I immediately took on an imposing caseload of wide-ranging criminal defense cases for indigent defendants, including drug possession, burglary, domestic violence, theft, shoplifting, and others. Fighting for my clients, I received numerous case and charge dismissals, conducted numerous hard-fought hearings, got plenty of clients out of jail, and even assisted capital attorneys on a death penalty case during my first year as an attorney. As if I didn’t have anything else going on, I took and passed the California State Bar (widely known as the most difficult lawyer licensing exam in the United States) in 2009. I became a member of the Federal Bar in the Federal District Court of Arizona and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2009.

In 2010, I came to Phoenix, Arizona and worked for four years as a defense attorney with the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office. Most of my time in the Public Defender’s Office was spent in a specialty division: Vehicular. In the Vehicular Division, I conducted numerous felony jury trials. I worked on cases including aggravated DUI, aggravated assault, manslaughter, murder, unlawful flight, and endangerment (to name a few). I fought and won jury acquittals on cases and charges, and procured lesser-included charges for numerous clients. I’ve fought and had charges for my clients dropped from felonies to misdemeanors. I’ve fought and won suppression hearings (to have evidence thrown out), hearings to have my clients released from jail, and am widely regarded as an intelligent, effective, thoughtful, and caring advocate for my clients by my prosecution adversaries and from the judges and court staff I practice in front of. After receiving a hung jury in one of my trials, one juror even gave me a hug and asked me to keep doing what I was doing, later becoming my personal friend. I’ve saved my clients decades upon decades of jail and prison time through hard work, creativity, perseverance, and performing well under pressure.

I run my own law practice with the same dedication to fighting relentlessly for my clients as I have since my first day as an attorney. I hate bullies. I hate when the state comes after good people. I hate when the police use scare tactics and trickery to do harm to my clients and their families. And I will fight back with every tool I have at my disposal. My clients are not simply just a paycheck. I believe in what I do and I don't take my clients for granted. If you are looking for a fighter and a team approach to your case or that of your loved one, I’m sure I’ll be speaking with you soon.
