Dan Viets has practiced criminal defense law, primarily representing people charged with marijuana law violations and other non-violent, victimless offenses for nearly 30 years in Circuit, Municipal and Federal Courts throughout that state of Missouri. Dan has also successfully represented many Defendants in appeals of criminal convictions and forfeiture cases in the Missouri Courts of Appeals and in the Missouri Supreme Court. Dan has won numerous jury and bench trials. In addition, he has won appeals in all three districts of the Missouri Courts of Appeals, as well in the Missouri Supreme Court.
Dan Viets has fought for justice his entire career and has worked hard to earn his reputation as a respected criminal defense attorney and an honest man. He is the Missouri NORML Coordinator and has worked with NORML for the past 40 years. Dan was President of the Missouri Student Association when he was an undergraduate at MU and President of the Graduate/Professional Council when he was in law school at MU.
He is a former President of the Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers which presented him with the Atticus Finch Award, named for the attorney in the book and film “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Dan is also the winner of the NORML Lifetime Achievement Award and is the secretary of the National Board of Directors of NORML. He is the longest serving member of NORML’s National Board of Directors. Dan has also been recognized by Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers, america's Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys, Lawyers of Distinction and National Trial Lawyers for exhibiting excellence in the field of criminal law.
Dan served on the Missouri Bar Criminal Law Sub-Committees that drafted the 2014 revision of the Missouri Criminal Code which took effect January 1, 2017 and the new Missouri expungement law which takes effect January 1, 2018.
He is the host of the weekly radio program, “Sex, Drugs and Civil Liberties” on radio station KOPN, 89.5 FM every Tuesday evening. Dan is also the winner of the Audiency Award for looking most like the college professor who could always get you weed from Conan O’Brien on the Tonight Show in September of 2009.
