Garrett is a graduate of Kansas University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. He is an alumnus of the National Criminal Defense College.

Garrett has taken many cases to trial and has obtained numerous not guilty verdicts. He has also obtained many dismissals, including on serious charges like murder and rape. In addition to dismissals and not guilty verdicts, he has obtained many excellent results, such as probation on serious felonies, and treatment for non-violent drug offenders and alcohol related offenses, such as DUI/DWI.
