Mr. Serrat is a life member 8th district judicial conference, an adjunct Professor at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, the Past President of Ohio Hispanic Bar Association, current member of the Ohio Hispanic Bar Association, Member of the National Hispanic Bar Association, Member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Member of the Cuyahoga Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Member of the american Bar Association, and involved in the Cleveland 3 R’s High School Student Mentoring Program. He is currently a Cleveland Panel Member pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act for the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio.
Personal History
Attorney Jaime P. Serrat was born and raised in Tarragona, Spain. He moved to the United States with his brothers and sisters when he was fifteen years old. After completing high school in the Cleveland area, he attended Mount Union College and received a BA in Political Science on June 11, 1978. At Mount Union College, Mr. Serrat was a member of the Phi Gamma Mu National Honor Society and a member of the varsity men's soccer team.
Attorney Serrat obtained his Juris Doctorate from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law on December 17, 1982. Mr. Serrat was admitted to practice in the Federal Court for the Northern District of Ohio on April 21, 1986. He was also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Ohio on May 9, 1983 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on July 18, 1994.
On January 29, 1982, Mr. Serrat was honored with the Cuyahoga County Public Defender Meritorious Service Award, which he also received on October 18, 1985. Mr. Serrat was awarded the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland Certificate of Appreciation on October 25, 2000. In recognition of his outstanding volunteer services with the 3Rs - Rights Responsibilities - Realities, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association presented Mr. Serrat with a Certificate of Achievement and Appreciation for the 2010-2011 3Rs year. The 3Rs program is where members of the Cleveland legal community partner with local schools to personally connect with high school students to address fundamental real-world issues the students face, focusing on the U.S. Constitution to help the students:
Improve understanding of and respect for the rule of law and our Constitution;
Improve passage of the Ohio Graduation Test;
Provide practical career counseling to focus students on their potential beyond high school; and
Improve the “pipeline” of minorities flowing into legal careers in the region.
Jaime Serrat has been married to Kelly Larrick Serrat for over thirty-five years and together they have four daughters and two grandchildren. Mr. Serrat supports many local charities, as well as national charitable organizations, such as the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
